How do you feel about being paid for your work?

Posted on Oct 29th, 2007 by Wingsearching : Wingsearching Wingsearching
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for October 29, 2007:

I enjoy my work and obviously get paid for it, but if I got paid for what I was passionate about....(cooking)  it would some how cheapen it.  I like to make special desserts and meals for people I love.  I make gourmet dinners out of cheaper ingredients.  I like to be paid with smiles and MMMMMMM's if you know what I mean, but to get paid money would make it a job and not a labor of love that I enjoy immensely.  Many people have suggested that I open a restaurant or catering business, but I think it would change the way I look at cooking and would bridle my creativity.

I think know what you mean.

An exchange of money seems to turn fun into responsibility. Sudenly there are unspoken expectations involved. “Is it what they wanted?” replaces “I want to do this just this way.” A gift becomes a work for hire.

Exactly it becomes someone else's expectation instead of your creative expression.  I accept guidance or suggestions from the people I cook for, but I do it my own way.  This past week someone wanted a banana cake.  I took a dark chocolate cake and made it denser than normal, split it in half and filled it with hot fudge, banana mousse and slice banannas.  Topped it of with the mousse and a checkered design done it melted dark chocolate.  They loved it and it was not what the expected.  Creativity works out better when it is given freedom.

Sounds tooooooo fabulous.

And, seriously now, you’re so right, no freedom, scant creativity.
